Destination Weddings: Welcome bags for guests

Destination weddings are on the rise, with more and more couples jetting off to tie to the knot.  Sunshine, lower cost and a smaller guest list are the main reasons for this choice.  Having a smaller guest number actually means you can afford to add all the nice touches that you probably couldn’t do for a wedding at home which leads to todays topic of guest welcome bags.

Welcome bags are a great idea and really add a little something extra.  Your guests will really appreciate it.  It is nice to show that little touch of thanks to the people who have made the effort to travel abroad and celebrate with you.

So what to put in the welcome bag?  Well of course this is entirely up to you but below we have some suggestions to help you out.

As many of your guests will probably be staying in different hotels it would be handy to leave some contact information in the bag for someone who you have delegated to ‘go to’ wedding person – this may be a bridesmaid or groomsman, include the name of their hotel and the contact phone number for the hotel.

Some local information about the place you are staying is always a winner with guests, especially if you are very familiar with it.  Recommendations for great restaurants, bars, places of interest and a map will go down well.

An itinerary for any wedding guests is a must for a welcome bags, it gives your guests the times, dates, locations and meet places for any events related to the wedding.  It also saves you or members of your wedding party running round relaying the information to all the guests.

If you have the budget another nice touch is to put in a gift from the local area, if you are heading to Greece then consider a small vial of olive oil, if you’re in Mexico then local tequila is a nice touch.  If your budget doesn’t quite stretch to local gifts then you can always include a hand written thank you card or letter to each guests and maybe a few holiday novelty gifts that you can bring with you from the UK.

If there are children attending the wedding consider including an activity book or a few small toys that will keep them entertained.  The parents will love the gesture and it’s always fun for kids getting new gifts.

If you have  bigger budget and wanting to create a luxury gift bag then consider some small bottle of Prosecco from the local supermarket or check out the offers in duty-free.  Local souvenirs are also a nice touch.  You can consider taking fans with you that have been engraved with your wedding date.  Some luxury toiletries would also be nice for your guests.
